I Heart Faces: People's Choice

It's been busy around here lately. Well, not on the blog,  but at KLSmith Photography and for me, personally. Which is why it's been so not busy here.

I'm working on getting caught up- until then, here's a must share from Miss Rileigh's shoot. This pretty ballerina has some serious rock and roll in her and was incredibly fun to shoot.

{m family} Ft Leonard Wood Family Childrens Photography

I had a truly lovely first session here at Fort Leonard Wood when I met this family at the park for some play time. :) Charming girls, loving parents and plenty of love and smiles going around.

An extra heartfelt thank you to this family for taking the very precious time to do this session. :)

The motivation behind my photography journey is my family. I want pictures hanging on my walls that reflect my memories (funny faces and all), not static shots that look like everyone else's walls.
An extra little bonus for me is being able to get those kinds of shots of my friends (and their children).
Catching this little guy (who is 5 weeks younger than my son) figuring out the slide at an indoor play park was just awesome.

Motto Family {Clarksville Ft Campbell Family Portraits}

I had the lovely opportunity to meet Shelly from Our Motto is Patience when she asked me to do some family portraits. Her boys are adorable, her husband obviously adores her,  and the whole family was wonderful about dealing with humid, threatening weather and hordes of mosquitoes.

Since it was photographing my own child that spurred me to pursue photography, it makes sense that I really enjoy shooting children.

But I knew really quickly that traditional portrait style just wasn't for me.

I wanted the laugh, the eyebrow (in the case of my kiddo!). You know, those expressions that makes you say "that's so *child's name*" when look at the picture.

That's why I love shooting at a child's home. They are comfortable, relaxed.

Happy kiddo, happy photographer.

Why I love photography

I love this picture. I snapped it this afternoon right after my son's nap. It is not a fabulous picture from a technical perspective. But, it captures {that} moment. He's watering our container garden. It's one of those things that I want to teach him- where food comes from. 20 years from now, I can look at this picture and see him discovering the world around him.

I started looking to educate myself about my camera because I was so dissatisfied by the studio pictures we had done. They didn't capture who he was in that moment. This picture, for all it's faults, does exactly that.

I've been working on collecting interesting props and wanted to share two of my current favorites.

Photo Challenge and Project 365

Project 365 Day 2

The only editing on this photo is to saturate the color just a tad. I'm still not great at messing with the quality on the white, but I'm gonna play with it tomorrow.

I'm also submitting this photo for the i heart faces Best Face of 2010 Challenge. While I don't think it really compares to some of their contributor's photos, I look at it and see the progress I've made over the last year with my shooting. I knew when I took it how it would come out and it was a shot I was trying to get. I couldn't have done this on purpose a year ago.

A White Christmas

This Christmas my son was old enough to really enjoy the holiday, and we even got some snow on Christmas Eve.

We spent the afternoon putting the finishing touches on wrapping while he enjoyed some apples in the winter sunshine.

Then we popped out to the barn to visit the ponies and hand out treats.

Then we came home for a little more fun in the snow

We finished the night with some cuddles and chocolate.

I hope everyone is enjoying their holidays!

Fall is my favorite season

My Other Favorite Subject

I hadn't taken many pictures of people before having my son, but I've gotten a lot more experience over the last year or so. Now, he's one of my favorite subjects and I enjoy shooting most kids. Here are some of my favorite recent shots.
